Senior Coach Damian Sutherland writes – Steph had to play centre half forward each week, arguably the hardest spot to play on the ground. In 2018 we had players like Kat, Jazzy and Sonia playing this position along with Kayla and Bec Grant often up in the forward line as well, the team had multiple options for tall targets in the forward line.
This year, with injuries and unavailable players Steph had the challenging and physically demanding job of having to be the main tall target on our forward line. Week in week out Steph would always have to do the heavy lifting against taller and stronger opponents and after she kicked goals in her first few games of the season, making her a target, she was often double teamed by opposition sides.
As a coach it would have been great to have the luxury of having her on a flank, a spot where she could use her speed to good effect, and the space in the one on one to get a leap and jump; but ultimately Steph was the down the line kick to option when we just had to bomb it forward
Against these odds Steph was incredibly brave and was still able to take contested marks, lead our goal kicking and put in a courageous effort in each week.
Body battered, fingers usually crunched by defenders punching her hands, exhausted because she ran her heart out – Steph is a very worthy recipient of this award
