VALE: PHYLL McKENNA
It is with great sadness that we learn of the recent passing of Mrs Phyll McKenna, who alongside her late husband, and club Life Member Jim McKenna, was a wonderful contributor to our club over many years. The St. Mary’s Salesian AFC, Committee, Supporters, Players and Past Players extend our sincere condolences to Phyll’s family, and especially sons Robert and Peter, daughters Bev and Christine and son-in-law Brian.
Rob McKenna played 108 games for St Mary’s, was club captain, club coach, two time premiership player (1975 and 1978) and three time Best and Fairest (1970, 71, 74). Peter McKenna played 277 games for St Mary’s, was club captain, club coach, three time premiership player (1978, 1979 and 1980) and two time Best and Fairest (1982 and 1983). Brian Thomas, is a Club Life member and former President. He played 50 games for St Mary’s and was reserves captain and reserves coach, and is a foundation organiser of our newly formed Past Players Coterie.
Phyll, who had suffered Child Polio which necessitated a leg calliper, spent many a match day “touring” the ground on home matches and raised in excess of $1000 dollars a season from her efforts to sell raffle tickets to supporters of both teams and players alike. A truly amazing woman. Brian Thomas organised for Phyll, or ‘Mrs Mac’ as she was known to all at the club, to come along to the Past Players Lunch in Rd 18 2014, where she was warmly welcomed by all. Phyll was 92, and surrounded by her family at the end.
A Service to celebrate the life of Mrs Phyllis Anne McKenna was held on THURSDAY Dec. 3, 2015 at The Cordell Chapel, Fawkner Memorial Park
