It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of Gold Saints Member Beverley Thomas.
Bev was a great St Mary’s person, and one of those many wonderful custodians of our club’s story. She was a long-time Gold Saints Member, and we all delighted in her company at the many Gold Saints lunches that she attended.
Her family ties to the club run very deep. Bev’s husband Brian Thomas is a Club Life Member, Gold Saint and former Club President, Coach and Player. Brian played over 50 games for the club, was Reserves Captain in 1969 and again in 1977, and Reserves coach in 1969, 1977, 1982 and 1983. Her two brothers Robert and Peter are both club legends. Rob McKenna played 105 games for the club, was a senior Premiership Player in 1975 and 1978 and Club Best and Fairest in 1970, 1971 and 1974, and club captain in 1971 and 1974. Peter McKenna played 277 games for the club, was a senior Premiership player in 1978, 1979 and 1980, Club Best and Fairest in 1982 and 1983, and club captain in 1986. Bev’s father Jim McKenna is a club Life Member and her mother Phyllis was a great club stalwart over many years.
The St. Mary’s Salesian AFC, Committee, Life Members, Supporters, Players and Past Players extend our sincere condolences to Beverley’s family, and especially to Brian, Robert and Peter.
We invite you to leave your tribute to Beverley Thomas below, and pass on your thoughts and memories to the family.
VALE BEVERLEY THOMAS
by Don Malcolm
Yesterday, Friday May 25, Joan and I along with David’s wife Susan attended the funeral of Bev Thomas, wife of Past President, Coach, Gold Saint and life member, Brian Thomas. The Thomas and McKenna families have a long history with St. Mary’s.
We have been friends and part of the growing up of their families since the early seventies. Bev, Brian, Joan and I used to get together after a game and write the Gold Saints black, The Saint and early Ferndale Flash coverage of games, mis-demeanors of players and lots of social notes over many years.
Bev had been suffering from initial diagnoses of Liver Cancer , later to be found to be Bile Cancer which progressed extremely fast over the later few weeks and ended with her death last Sunday.
The service was a great celebration of her family life and was held at The Centre Ivanhoe where some 130 people attended.
A lovely lady who will be sadly missed by those who had the pleasure to meet and be involved with her. SMS were represented by Brian Perry, Sue Malcolm , Joan and Don Malcolm, Peter Leman and of course Brian Thomas. A sad day but a lovely service.
