SAINTS
WIN PREMIERSHIP BY NINE POINTS
by Ron Hennessey
Progress Press Wednesday Sept 10, 1975
St Mary's finished all over Donvale to
win the Eastern Suburbs Churches A-Grade
Premiership by 9 points. Both backlines
were on top in a fast and furious first
quarter and there were only 3 points separating
the two sides at the first change. St
Mary's took control right from the first
bounce of the final quarter and bombarded
the goals. Goals to Brown and Mory
gained the lead for the Saints at the
ten minute mark and the stage was set
for a thrilling finish. Donvale forced
the ball forward in a desperate bid to
regain control and an opportune goal to
Ptak from the goal square gave them back
the lead. The Saints were still burning
however and a magnificent long goal from
Mory regained the lead for the
Saints, and minutes later Brown
booted the sealer to give St Mary's their
first ever A Grade flag.

SAINTS SUPREME
St Mary's crushed Emmanuel to remain the only
undefeated side in A Grade with four games played.
The Saints were in scintillating form in the first
quarter and piled on 8 goals to Emmanuel's 2.
Emmanuel played better in the second term but
the Saints still held a handy 7 goal lead at half
time. After the interval the standard of play
dropped and the game became scrambly but still
the Saints went further ahead to open up a match-winning
lead by three quarter time. St Mary's began the
final quarter with two quick goals but then relaxed
to let Emmanuel reduce the gap somewhat but the
result was never in doubt and the Saints went
on to a very comfortable 52 point win. ESCFA

SAINTS TOP DOGS
St Mary's completely overwhelmed a disappointing
Bentleigh side to score a crushing 114 point
win. The main difference between the two sides
was that the Saints combined magnificently all
say whilst the Bulldogs failed to show any signs
of teamwork at all. The first quarter was fairly
even with the Saints holding a 2 goal advantage
after kicking with the breeze. After quarter
time however, the Saints took control all over
the ground, with their rovers giving them great
drive, they peppered the goals just before half
time to go to an 8 goal lead. After half time
the same pattern continued and the Saints raced
away to build up a match winning lead by three
quarter time. Bentleigh fought the game out
to the finish but just couldn't get the run
of the ball at all. ESCFA Football Record

SAINTS TOPPLED
Donvale crushed St. Mary's by 69 points in the
main A grade game last week. It was the Saints'
first loss for the season. After trailing early
in the first quarter Donvale raced away to open
up a 6 goal break by the end of the first quarter.
In the second quatrer the Vales continued to
attack strongly but the Saints back line defended
well to keep their side within striking distance
at half time. The Saints were unable to reduce
the gap in the third quarter and at three quarter
time were a beaten side trailing by 8 goals.
In the final term Donvale went right on with
the job and drew right away to a very convincing
win. The Donvale ruckman dominated all day and
played a big part in their side's win. ESCFA

points. The first quarter was fairly even with
the diffence only 3 points in the Saints favour.
North hit the front early in the second quarter
and by half time the saints had regained the
lead despite inaccurate kicking for goal. The
Saints broke away in the 3rd quarter to lead
by 7 goals at the last change, but North came

SAINTS SNATCH VICTORY
St Mary's scraped in by only five points from
Emmanuel in the main A Grade game. Emmanuel
held a narrow lead after a hard even first quarter
and then threw away the chance to hold a good
lead at half time by kicking badly for goal.
The third quarter was also very even and at
the last change the Saints had gone to a 1 point
lead. It was nip and tuck in a thrilling last
quarter but towards the end of the quarter Emmanuel
went to a 7 point lead and looked to have the
game won but it was not to be as the Saints
fought back to snatch the lead with only minutes
to go and then held on to win narrowly. ESCFA
