PAST
PRESIDENTS, SECRETARIES AND LIFE MEMBERS LUNCH
Saturday June 23, 2007
"We have had 19 presidents over the journey
at St Mary's, which is not a lot of presidents
over 75 years. Unfortunately we have lost four
of them along the way, but of the 15 still living
we have 11 of them in the room today. Of those
eleven there is a combined 42 years experience
as president. We also have seven of our past secretaries
in the room and 27 life members."
Brian Perry
"Being Persident of the Club is one of the
most rewarding things I have done in my time.
It is a lot of hard work, which I am sure all
of the other presidents will agree. It is a lot
of time and effort but at the end of the day to
be sitting in a room like this and to be looking
at the football which is being put out on the
ground each week is what makes it all worthwhile."
Brian Perry
"It
is a privelege to be involved with a club that
I have been a part of for 25 years as a player
and coach. The amount of people who you see along
the way is a reflection on the people we have
had at St Mary's over 75 sensational years which
amounts to at least 1300 people."
Michael Learmonth
"We look at the honour boards and we
see the names up there and it is very important
that we recognise your involvement and your committment
to making St. Mary's a better place.....that is
one of the things that 'Jedda' and I spoke about
when we took the coaching job. We wanted to make
our contribution to making St. Mary's a better
place."

ANOTHER HISTORIC LUNCHEON
by Don Malcolm
As part of the 75 year celebration of St.
Mary's, the club held a past Presidents, Secretaries
and Life Members luncheon today in the social
rooms. It is interesting that only four of the
available presidents were unable to make this
luncheon. The guest speaker at the lunch was
Phil Stevens who was the VAFA General
Manager when the club joined the Amateurs in
1990. Phil is now the Gen. Manager of the Southern
Football League.
One Secretary and juniors coach, who sent his
apology is Dick Hooker, now living in
Currrrumbin Queensland, who many will remember.
As a player, club secretary and Junior coach,
Dick coached the U16's for several seasons finishing
4th in 1966, 3rd in 1967,and 2nd in 1968. Dick
also was involved in negotiations with Hawthorn
AFL side when Alan Martello was wooed away from
the Saints for the princely sum of $100. How
things have changed.
He remembers how he, as a new player, was in
awe of the likes of Les Moss, Alby
Vickery, Barry Townsend, Barrie
Griffiths, Rob McKenna, and the toughness
of John Ross, all past champions of St.
Mary's FC.
Today's games showed the past champions attending,
the style of play that the two senior teams
are playing each week. The coache's talk to
the luncheon was most informative and certainly
gave a full run down on where the club is heading
for the future.
Special thanks should go to Brian Perry
for his ensuring that everything went to plan.
