Saturday April 9, 2011
Temperature in the mid 20's with rain predicted for
early afternoon the boys from Old Westbourne journeyed
to Ferndale for their first 2011 encounter. Fortunately
the rain did not eventuate until late in the day.
The big event to start the day was the getting
together of many St Mary's Salesian past players
and officials along with several dignitaries to
celebrate the opening of the refurbished club rooms.
There were representatives from the late 1940's
and 50's teams. The 1960, 1975, 1990, 1993, 2000
premiership teams were well represented along with
the club's most games played player, Evan Evans
who now has two sons playing in the U19's
The Mayor of Boroondara, Nicholas Tragas
and South Ward Councillor Kevin Chow, were
joined by the local State Government Member Graham
Watt and representatives of the East Malvern
Community Bank, Peter Norman and Peter Wolff.
St Mary's Salesian served a range of fine finger
food and drinks for the occasion.
A tour of the new facilities was undertaken and
all were suitably impressed with the layout of the
facility. The new umpire's room, gymnasium, attractive
shower and toilet areas, the clubs ice bath facility,
all topped off by the magnificent view of the playing
area from the Malcolm Room and new deck.
Whilst the food and drinks were being taken we
were entertained by the St.Mary's Salesian Reserves
team doing battle. As a great start to the day the
Reserves ran out winners by 57 points.
The senior game followed with Old Westbourne flying
out of the blocks to take a four goal lead at quarter
time. The Malcolm Room fell quiet after spectators
considered the blitz on the goals by the warriors.
Fortunately SMS second quarter efforts brought the
crowd back to life and from then on the game became
a bit of a cliff hanger with the Saints only holding
a small 4 point lead at ¾ time. Saints put
in a good last quarter to win by 8 points and so
the party got underway again.
The Under 19's also did the club proud by winning
against Melbourne High Old Boys.
A great opening round by all teams and a fitting
result to celebrate the room opening.
Congratulations and thanks must go to all out participants
in the Buy A Brick Program with special mention
to City of Boroondara who financed the majority
of the work, the East Malvern Community Bank and
Rotary Club Balwyn.
Norbert Graetzer, David Malcolm, Matthew Ellis
and the committee members of St Mary's Salesian,
must be congratulated for the fine function, time
and effort put in to make the day a huge success.
We Applaud You and now on to Bigger and Better
things in the field of play. Well Done
THE RECOGNITION PLAQUE recognises the generous
contributions towards the redevelopment from members
and supporters of the St Mary's Salesian Amateur
Football Club.
